10 Ways to Help Reduce Your Risk of Colon Cancer

I just saw somewhere that the month of March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, so i thought it would be best to share these few tips with you on how to prevent colorectal cancer, that is cancer of the colon.

so here goes:

1. Reduce your alcohol intake. When it comes to cancer prevention, less (alcohol) is more. Alcohol use is a known risk factor for colorectal cancer -- among other cancers -- with risk increasing as alcohol intake increases. If you choose to drink, try limiting your intake to no more than one drink daily.

2. Quit smoking. Smoking is not just a risk factor for lung cancer, but for all digestive system cancers, including colorectal, stomach and esophageal. Make the decision to quit this month, once and for all.

3. Get moving! Sedentary lifestyles are associated with an increased risk of digestive system cancers, therefore one must exercise regularly.

4. Get serious about weight loss. Obesity is a strong risk factor for colorectal cancer, and it is estimated that risk increases about 15 percent with each five additional points of body mass index beyond the upper end of normal range.

5. Eat less red meat. Eating red meat increases your chances of getting colon cancer.

6. Avoid foods preserved with sodium nitrite. They also increase your chances of getting colon cancer.

7. Eat more fruits and non-starchy vegetables. Now that you've freed up all that space in your diet from cutting back bacon and red meat, what will you replace it with? How about fruits and non-starchy vegetables -- such as dark leafy greens, beets, squashes, bell peppers, tomatoes, asparagus, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli and green beans? These foods have a protective effect against colorectal cancer.

8. Get plenty of fiber, preferably from whole foods.

9. Take a vitamin D supplement . That is if you live in the colder parts of the world.

10. Drink your milk. If you like and tolerate cow's milk, here's some good news: Consuming it regularly may have a modest protective effect against colorectal cancer. Higher intake of dietary calcium (including from supplements) and liquid milk in particular has been associated with decreased risk of developing colorectal cancer compared to lower intake. Importantly, relying on cheese as the primary source of calcium may not be the optimal strategy to help reduce colorectal cancer risk. Research suggests that high intakes of cheese may actually have the opposite effect, possibly due to its concentrated saturated fat content.

Student Sues Parents to Force Them to Pay for her College Education - SAY WHAT?

Rachel Canning is an 18-year-old senior at Morris Catholic High School in New Jersey. She is a cheerleader, lacrosse player, and honors student. Rachel is also gaining attention for an unusual lawsuit she has filed against her parents, Sean and Elizabeth Canning. As the Daily Record reports, Rachel is suing them for financial support and to “force them to pay for her college education.”

In papers filed at the court, Rachel maintains that her parents decided that on her 18th birthday, she would be cut off from them, “both financially and emotionally.” In the papers Rachel also said, “My parents have rationalized their actions by blaming me for not following their rules. They stopped paying my high school tuition to punish the school and me and have redirected my college fund, indicating their refusal to afford me an education as a punishment.”

Ex-U.S. magistrate who changed baby's name from 'Messiah' censured

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) - A former Tennessee magistrate who ruled last summer that a baby could not be called "Messiah" because that name was reserved for Jesus Christ was censured on Monday for bias.

Lu Ann Ballew was found guilty of violating judicial canons regarding impartiality and bias by a six-member panel of the Tennessee Judicial Board of Conduct. She was fired in January after being cited for religious bias in her decision.

The penalty will be spelled out later in a written opinion, according to Michele Wojciechowski, spokeswoman for Tennessee's administrative office of the courts. It took the panel of four judges, one lawyer and a layperson 90 minutes to reach a unanimous decision, she said.

Ballew, who had been a child support magistrate in Cocke County in eastern Tennessee, last August ordered a baby's name changed from Messiah to Martin, saying the former was a "title" reserved for Christ.

The child's parents, who were appearing in court to settle other issues involving their child, appealed the ruling while continuing to call the boy Messiah. Another judge later held that Ballew's ruling was unconstitutional.

Messiah is an increasingly popular name. It was the 387th most used name for boys born in the United States in 2012, based on 762 applications for Social Security cards filed with the U.S. Social Security Administration. That is more than double the number of applications made in 2011.

The Colours of Ghanaian Funeral Attire Explained!

BlackredBlackred

In this age of modernity and technology, does it really matter what colors one wears to say goodbye to the dead?

On weekends, particularly Saturdays, most streets in Ghana become awash with mourners clad in red, black, and sometimes white clothing.

The Ghanaian is very superstitious and has a strong belief in ghosts and ancestors. It is believed the dead cannot rest in peace until a befitting funeral and burial ceremony are held for them. According such courtesies to the dead requires special funeral clothes, which traditionally come in red, black, brown, and white colors.

People sometimes have to pay a high price for these clothes. But the reality is, one cannot afford to attend a funeral in just any attire without attracting criticism. According to Dr. Dan Bright, a sociologist at the University of Ghana, funerals are special occasions in Ghana because they celebrate the life of the deceased. “When a person dies, he enters the spiritual realm, and for that matter, the ordinary cloth we wear will not be appropriate. It is a special event,” Bright said.

Culturally, the black and red attire for funeral ceremonies in Ghana signifies a grieving period. Traditionally, red is associated with danger and black with grief, hence the use of these colors to communicate the passing of a loved one.

However, when a person grows to a ripe old age of seventy years and above, the belief is that the person has lived long and has been blessed, so why not rejoice instead of grieve? Traditionally, white signifies victory or joy; so on such an occasion as the final funeral rites for someone over the age of seventy, the white cloth is used to celebrate the life of that person. In most cultures in Ghana, too, the white cloths are worn on Sunday, the final day of the funeral rites, to show relief in the assurance that the deceased has made a successful transition into the spirit world.

It isn’t easy trying to unravel the history behind the use of these colors, but as Dr. Bright points out: “These colors have become symbolic in our culture, and as we all grow, we get associated with them.”

According to Ghanaian customs and traditions:

The Red cloth is often worn by close relatives to show how deeply they feel about the loss of their loved one.

The Black cloth is worn by distant relatives and well-wishers who come to mourn with the family. This shows that they are grieving and feel the pain of the family as if it were their own. Black is also associated with death and mourning in Ghana, hence the use of that color.

The White cloth is worn when the deceased was seventy years and above to celebrate having lived a full life. Rather than a cause for sadness, it is seen as a joyous occasion. The white also, in some cultures, represents resurrection and victory over death.
